The first railway, constructed in 1854, was horsedrawn and carried produce from Goolwa at the mouth of the River Murray to the harbour at Port Elliot.
All the early railways, embankments and cuttings were dug and built with manual labour. The tracks, engines and bridge constructions were imported from Britain.
The lines are shown against the background of the development Counties and Hundreds, which can be seen in greater detail here.(Opens in new Tab)
